AI copyright around the world
Episode 5 of 14 of our podcast on copyright and AI.

A human author is the rule everywhere, but countries draw the line differently. Italy's 2025 AI law requires the work to be the author's own intellectual creation; in the United States, Thaler v. Perlmutter confirmed that an AI cannot be listed as the author; the United Kingdom grants 50 years to the person who made the arrangements for a computer-generated work.
A Beijing court protected an image made with Stable Diffusion because of the work that went into the prompts. The same image can be free to copy in New York, protected for 50 years in London and protected in Beijing.
